Features: During World War I, Germany's research team led by Wernher von Braun developed the V-2 rocket, which flew across the English Channel from mainland Europe straight to the capital of Britain and exploded in London, marking the first ballistic missile used in war. It was called the "secret weapon of the Third Reich" by Hitler. However, without the application of inertial technology, none of this would have been possible. The inertial technology first applied to military warfare is now widely used in economic construction and daily life. This book aims to guide readers in understanding the magical inertial technology.
Detailed Introduction: Inertial technology is a comprehensive technology that is both ancient and modern but not mysterious. From the past to the present, from domestic to international, from land, sea to sky, and space, it can be said that almost the entire world is connected with inertial technology in some way. Especially since the 20th century, from the V-2 rocket launched by Germany during World War II in the 1940s, the launch of artificial Earth satellites in the 1950s, manned moon landing in the 1960s, to various advanced weapons used in the Gulf War in the 1990s, all demonstrate the footsteps of inertial technology's development and application, revealing the close relationship between inertial technology and weapon systems, military equipment, and military warfare. As for civilian applications, from the development of the national economy to daily life, such as transportation related to the sea, land, air, and space, geodesy, mining, oil drilling, tunnel engineering, and water conservancy, all show the achievements of inertial technology's application and development, which similarly illustrates the wide range of applications and the close interconnections of inertial technology in civilian fields.
Based on the important role and significance of inertial technology in both military and civilian fields, and considering that many readers are not very familiar with it, I and some of my friends who work on inertial technology in China have long harbored a wish—to introduce this technology to everyone in a vivid and popular manner. Not only do we aim to explain its scientific concepts clearly but also to emphasize its wide-ranging applications, striving to integrate scientific rigor, knowledge, interest, and practicality. This way, readers can not only develop an interest in reading but also understand its role and prospects.
At the time of editing and publishing the "Academician Popular Science Book Series," through discussions with friends, extensive collection of materials, and widespread solicitation of opinions, we have finally completed this popular science book. The book is divided into six chapters, each with both internal connections and a certain degree of independence. The entire book highlights the basic knowledge of inertial technology and its broad application areas, allowing readers to choose to read through or select chapters based on their interests and needs.
Writing popular science books has its own characteristics and principles. Although we have been engaged in work related to inertial technology for many years, writing a popular science book in this field is deeply felt to be far from easy. Due to our lack of experience in this area and limited insights into writing, there may be some shortcomings in this book. We sincerely hope that readers will kindly point out any issues so that we can improve them in future editions to better meet the requirements of popular science books and the needs of readers.
