Features: The Tang Dynasty was a period of maturity for Chinese regular script (kaishu). It was characterized by strict adherence to rules, elegance, and balance, setting a standard for later generations and demonstrating principles. It had an immeasurable influence, especially for beginners who should prioritize steadiness and start with Tang Dynasty regular script methods. This ensures a solid foundation, balanced structure, and later allows for the graceful transition to running script and cursive script, expressing uniqueness within commonality. This is what is known as "understanding the constant to achieve transformation." Although Tang Dynasty regular script was highly refined in theory, Tang calligraphers exhibited diverse styles—some lean and hard, some thick and vigorous, some round, and some square but strong. Yet, all shared a harmonious balance between substance and form. Beginners can choose according to their preferences. If practiced diligently, the benefits last a lifetime.
Tang Dynasty had many calligraphers skilled in regular script, including well-known figures as well as anonymous or lesser-known masters. The Wang Junshi Brick Pagoda Inscription, written by Jing Ke, is a masterpiece by an anonymous calligrapher. The Wang Junshi Brick Pagoda Inscription is in regular script, with 17 lines and 17 characters per line. The text was composed by Shangguan Lingzhi, and the calligraphy was done by Jing Ke. This inscription was carved in the third year of the Xiangqing era of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty. Due to its extremely thin stone, it suffered damage shortly after being unearthed, first splitting into two, then into three, then into four, and finally into seven pieces. As a result, few complete or high-quality rubbings have been preserved.
