Features: China possesses a vast number of ancient books, which carry the historical and cultural accumulation of thousands of years before the Qing Dynasty and preserve countless documentary materials for reference. They are important sources of information for Chinese history and culture. However, due to the varying time gaps between them and the present, they often require some processing and organization. Experienced scholars may have developed their own basic skills for organizing ancient books through long-term practice, but beginners often face a period of confusion and uncertainty in the process. Understanding some of the basic skills used by predecessors can be beneficial in shortening this exploration period. The basic skills for organizing ancient books are multifaceted, and here only a few key aspects are discussed. Classification, catalogs, textual variations, punctuation, reference books, collation, textual research, and annotations are all fundamental skills for organizing ancient books. Although they may not be placed at the pinnacle of academic achievement, they should be mastered and applied skillfully. To help beginners gain some familiarity with ancient books, the author has also provided examples of several categories of ancient books beyond the eight discussions, such as the Five Classics and Four Books, encyclopedias and compendia, local chronicles, Buddhist and Daoist canons, and seven other categories, each with its own chapter, to give readers an overview of the main types of ancient books. Together with the eight discussions, this forms a total of fifteen chapters.
