Features: Huazhen, an active figure in the Yangzhou art scene of the mid-18th century, was an extremely representative literati-style professional painter. Born into modest circumstances, he dedicated his life to selling paintings, remained humble and content with poverty, studied diligently, and drew widely from various sources, ultimately becoming a distinguished painter skilled in poetry, calligraphy, painting, and floral-and-bird, figure, and landscape works, as well as one rich in creativity. With his art that blended refinement and accessibility, he became a "voice in the empty valley" of his time and had a profound influence on the small-ink floral-and-bird painting of the Northern and Southern painting circles in the 20th century (his floral-and-bird style is known as the "Xinluo Style"). Previous art historians and critics often approached Huazhen from their own perspectives, either focusing on his shared similarities with the Yangzhou school in their detachment from the orthodox Qing Dynasty painting, classifying him as one of the "Eight Eccentrics"; or emphasizing his adoption of the orthodox painter Yun Shouping's style, believing his art played a role in countering the "decline" of the Eight Eccentrics. However, they never conducted systematic and in-depth research, nor explored in detail the dual identity of Huazhen as a professional painter with a literati background and the aesthetic tendency of his art, which combined popular and refined elements. It was not until the latter half of the 20th century, especially in the last two decades, that a number of more serious research papers emerged, and scholars began to consider related issues based on a comprehensive review of Huazhen's life, thoughts, and art. This issue of Du Yun has invited Mr. Yin Yongnian to select a representative collection of papers on Huazhen. These articles focus either on critical reviews or on detailed studies, some providing comprehensive discussions on Huazhen as a person and his art, while others examine specific issues in his life and works. Whether in reconstructing historical facts, analyzing art, or discussing problems, these papers will help us from different angles to understand the achievements and shortcomings of Huazhen research. They will also provide valuable insights for further reflection on the academic topic of the intermingling of "practice" and "profit" and the fusion of refinement and popular elements in the later history of Chinese painting.
