Features: The Biographical Chronicle of Ruan Yuan is characterized by its vast scope, broad coverage, comprehensive materials, and meticulous research. It not only provides a comprehensive and multi-faceted account of Ruan Yuan's life and achievements but also reflects the social and political conditions of mid-Qing China and their changes, as well as the trajectory of the development of academic and cultural traditions of that era. Its breadth of collection, depth of effort, and dedication far surpass those of older chronicles. As a Qing scholar once said, "The study of genealogies is also the study of history." The Biographical Chronicle of Ruan Yuan truly deserves this praise. It is believed that the publication of this chronicle will provide academia with a reliable and usable annalistic biographical resource, further advancing the study of Qing-era social politics and academic culture. The Biographical Chronicle of Ruan Yuan is a large-scale chronicle with detailed materials, comprising one million words, a rarity in the genre of chronicles. It adopts a combination of direct narration and annotations, organizing events by year and month, documenting Ruan Yuan's activities and related historical events. The specific writing style involves summarizing events of a particular day, month, period, or year in a single sentence, termed the outline of the chronicle. This is followed by various documentary sources to narrate the events themselves as evidence, and then by annotations in the form of explanations, which also strive to use historical documents to ensure clarity and persuasive analysis. The chronicle compiles a vast amount of documentary materials related to Ruan Yuan's life, providing an exhaustive account of his historical events with minimal omissions. It is a specialized work formed through in-depth research, rich in academic value.
In the traditional era, chronicles of figures like Ruan Yuan (Grand Secretary, viceroy) often focused on the achievements and honors of the main subject, often neglecting aspects such as education, culture, academia, and social life. This creates many shortcomings for later readers and researchers. Modern scholars compiling new chronicles must have a comprehensive understanding of the subject and their era to effectively depict their characteristics using documentary sources. Thus, while the writing of a chronicle may appear to be merely a compilation of materials, it cannot lack the qualities of research and the scholar's expertise. Having published The Biography of Ruan Yuan and completed The Critical Biography of Ruan Yuan, I am well-equipped to write The Biographical Chronicle of Ruan Yuan, built on this solid foundation.
To enrich the format of the chronicle, I have included Brief Biographies of Related Figures. While focusing on Ruan Yuan's life in the chronicle, I also describe the activities and works of related figures, involving a large number of individuals. Introducing them comprehensively at first mention and then repeating the process at subsequent mentions would be redundant, while omitting them would make it difficult for readers to follow the narrative. Therefore, I have compiled Brief Biographies as an appendix for easy reference and use.
In recent years, some chronicles have included the birth and death of a certain number of individuals in each year. I believe this is unnecessary and takes up space, so I have not adopted this practice. Moreover, the birth and death dates of related figures can be found in the Brief Biographies.
When organizing the chronicle, even events occurring in the same month are listed separately with their dates, without omitting the month. Otherwise, readers would have to flip through previous entries to find the relevant month, which would be inconvenient, especially if the month has many entries or a lengthy entry, potentially leading to errors. The Biographical Chronicle of Ruan Yuan marks each event with its date, ensuring clarity at a glance.
