Why do endometrial polyps occur?

Patient's question:

It has been a year since I started having very heavy menstrual bleeding, accompanied by abdominal pain. After a thorough examination, it was found to be endometrial polyps, and currently, no treatment has been administered. I would like to ask why one might develop endometrial polyps?

Doctor's answer:

Endometrial polyps are caused by excessive fibrosis of the endometrium, presenting as weak, smooth, single or multiple lesions within the uterine cavity, which can lead to symptoms such as irregular bleeding. Their causes include:
1. Endocrine factors: Endometrial polyps are associated with high estrogen levels. Hormonal therapy during perimenopause and postmenopause can elevate estrogen levels in women.
2. Inflammatory factors: Long-term gynecological inflammation, such as childbirth, miscarriage, surgical procedures, or mechanical trauma, can lead to endometrial polyps.
Recommendation: If your ultrasound examination suggests endometrial polyps, a pathological examination after surgery is recommended for confirmation.
