This book introduces the bronze art of the Dian Kingdom. "Dian" refers to the ancient kingdom that flourished in the Dianchi region from the Warring States to the Western Han period. It declined in the late Western Han and was replaced by the prefecture-county system of the Central Plains dynasty in the early Eastern Han. The rise and fall of the Dian Kingdom, from its peak to its eventual demise, spanned roughly three to four hundred years. The Dian Kingdom had a long history, with its economy and culture already well-developed. However, it only gained significant attention from the Central Plains during the reign of Emperor Wu of the Western Han.
