What are the characteristics of endometrial polyps bleeding?

Patient's question:

Last night I heard from a friend that she had an endometrial polyp that had broken. Suddenly, I wanted to know what the characteristics of an endometrial polyp breaking are?

Doctor's answer:

Endometrial polyps are polypoid proliferations formed by endometrial inflammation. They may not cause any symptoms, or they may cause abnormal bleeding such as vaginal spotting outside of the menstrual period. Most endometrial polyps manifest as prolonged menstrual bleeding. Some small polyps with small stalks may be expelled along with the shedding of the endometrium during menstruation. Those that cannot be expelled on their own require hysteroscopic removal of endometrial polyps.
