Her footsteps spanned the world, and her works were widely read among the Chinese communities globally, with a large readership in mainland China. Her life, writings, and translations are very rich, totaling twenty-four volumes. Sanmao's English name is ECHO. "Sanmao" was her pen name, and it is mentioned in the preface of "Sanmao's School Days" that "Sanmao" hides an I Ching hexagram, but the mystery remains unknown. However, Sanmao herself once said that she chose this name because it was unremarkable, and another reason was that she believed her writing was ordinary, only worth three cents. Sanmao was born on March 26, 1943 (February 21 in the lunar calendar) in Chongqing, Sichuan. As a child, Sanmao showed a love for books and was reading "Dream of the Red Chamber" by the time she was five and a half. During her junior high school years, she read almost all the world classics available. In her second year of junior high, she left school and was taught by her parents, building a solid foundation in poetry, classical Chinese, and English. She later studied painting with two painters, Gu Fusheng and Shao Youxuan.
