Features: The concept of breadth awareness refers to whether an artist fully utilizes their aesthetic vision and artistic talent within their professional field, maximizing the capacity of artistic expression in depicting life, while also expanding the aesthetic realm of self-expression. Imagine if Qi Baishi only painted shrimp or Xu Beihong only painted horses—then their historical evaluation would be significantly diminished. As a figure painter, Gai Maosen keenly recognizes his historical mission and possesses a strong sense of responsibility, thus daring to challenge difficulties, rise to the occasion, and continuously broaden the expressive domain of figure painting. I would summarize this into four series:
- A thematic painting series focusing on revolutionary leaders and history;
- A Jiangnan landscape painting series depicting contemporary social customs;
- A highland landscape painting series featuring ethnic minorities in Xinjiang;
- An ancient figure painting series based on classical poetry and historical stories.
Each series boasts highly artistic representative works. Among the four, what is particularly commendable is his relentless pursuit of thematic figure painting, which is currently neglected. He believes that significant masterpieces from all eras and cultures are closely tied to the political activities, distinct ideologies, and clear utilitarian perspectives of each historical period—none of which hinder their invaluable artistic value. As a genre that directly studies humanity, figure painting should break free from the self-entertainment of literati painting and leverage its advantage in expressing human civilization and spiritual temperament, boldly asserting the expressive power of figure painting. It is precisely because of this understanding that he meticulously created works such as Cold Spring in Plum Garden to celebrate Premier Zhou Enlai, Lofty and Pure and Goma Jiangnan to honor Marshal Chen Yi, and Victory’s Steps depicting the triumphant advance in the Huaihai Campaign.
Currently, there is a misguided notion that thematic painting is inferior to purely personal emotional expression. Gai Maosen proves with his works that as long as an artist truly experiences profound emotions, is deeply moved, and possesses superior artistic techniques, thematic creation can also produce artistic masterpieces.
