Features: Traditional Chinese meticulous flower-and-bird painting has reached maturity. During the Five Dynasties and Northern Song periods, it had already achieved a peak in depicting objects and conveying emotions, making it difficult for later generations to surpass. In modern times, Western realism and the tradition of Song Dynasty life studies were introduced, but the depiction of ecological environments was neglected, still confined to the small framework of branch-style flowers, leading to a detachment between humans and landscapes, further weakening the artistic impact of the works. It wasn’t until the modern era, with the deepening of reform and opening-up, that a fundamental breakthrough occurred. Among the pioneers of innovation, Jin Hongjun, a middle-aged painter who grew up alongside the People’s Republic, stands out as one of the most solidly grounded. He was one of the first graduates of flower-and-bird painting from China’s art academies in the 1950s and is now a professor at the Central Academy of Fine Arts. Jin Hongjun’s meticulous flower-and-bird paintings have completed the transition from traditional to modern. His innovation lies in deeper exploration based on a profound foundation of tradition, widely absorbing the strengths of Eastern and Western painting, and more importantly, delving into the mysteries of nature, taking inspiration from creation. His works are grounded in life, with his thoughts and emotions infused into the meticulous craftsmanship, achieving a unity of subject and object, expanding the intellectual depth of flower-and-bird painting.
