Wondering what to do if you get a milk cyst during breastfeeding?

Patient's question:

Since the baby is still under six months old, I have been changing diapers for the baby. Recently, for some unknown reason, my breasts suddenly became swollen and painful, and I also developed a low fever. Today, I went to the hospital for a thorough examination, and the doctor said I have developed a galactoceles. Therefore, I would like to ask the experts what to do if I get a galactoceles during breastfeeding?

Doctor's answer:

If the breasts cannot be emptied promptly during lactation, excessive milk accumulation can easily lead to acute mastitis, breast cysts, or breast abscesses. The main symptoms include fever, breast swelling and pain, and higher skin temperature upon touch. Anti-inflammatory medication should be taken to treat the inflammation. For those with high fever, fever-reducing medication should be used simultaneously, along with massage and cold compresses on the breasts to promote milk duct unblocking. If there is inflammation, incision and drainage may be necessary when needed.
