Does trichomoniasis cause infertility?

Patient's question:

I have an 8-year-old daughter. Recently, she has had an increase in leukorrhea, which is thick and yellowish. Occasionally, she also experiences vaginal itching, and the symptoms of dysuria and urinary urgency have reappeared. My husband accompanied me to the hospital for a thorough examination, and the diagnosis was trichomoniasis. I am planning to have a second child. Doctor, can trichomoniasis lead to infertility?

Doctor's answer:

When trichomoniasis is transmitted, the vaginal pH value is generally 5.0-6.0, whereas the normal vaginal pH should be 4.2-5.0. Changes in the vaginal acid-base environment can interfere with sperm motility. Additionally, trichomonads can absorb sperm, and during trichomoniasis, the amount of purulent vaginal discharge increases significantly and continuously. The discharge contains a large number of white blood cells, all of which can hinder sperm viability. If the sperm count increases but their motility is poor, infertility may result. However, this is not irreversible. Most people can fully recover their fertility after the trichomoniasis heals on its own.
