Features: Trends in Forestry Legislation in Europe and Africa: In recent years, the revision of forestry laws worldwide has significantly accelerated. Forest laws have increasingly recognized that the interests involved or affected by forest management are multifaceted, while paying more attention to the environmental and social functions of forest resources, as well as their sustainable management and utilization. Additionally, new emphasis has been placed on broader public and private participation. Generally, adjustments to forest laws cover issues such as local and private forest management, the environmental functions of forests, forest management plans, and forest utilization contracts. This legislative study attempts to identify the main trends in forestry legislation on a regional basis. This publication includes examples of forestry laws in Europe and Africa. A previously published volume (FAO Legislative Study 66) covered Latin America, Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. Main Report of the Global Forest Resources Assessment 2000: The Global Forest Resources Assessment 2000 (FRA2000) is the most comprehensive report on forest resources since FAO first reported on them 50 years ago. FRA2000 is based on a bottom-up approach, supplemented by top-down confirmation at the global level. The core of FRA2000 consists of data, information, and knowledge provided by countries, supplemented and confirmed by "top-down" research and remote sensing analysis using new technologies. Subsequently, countries were invited to review and comment on the results of the combined global analysis. Many leading institutions formed partnerships, particularly important of which was the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, which served as a "linkage point" for information from industrialized countries. This publication consists of the main report of FRA2000. Part I presents the main results on forest area and changes, timber volume and biomass, research on plantations, and other key parameters of FRA2000. Part II covers results for forest regions and subregions. Part III describes the methods and procedures supporting the assessment, the cartographic process for obtaining global maps of forest cover and ecoregions, and also describes the development of the comprehensive forest information system (FORIS). Part IV summarizes the assessment's conclusions, reviews the assessment process, and proposes recommendations for future efforts. Finally, detailed appendices provide definitions and terms, as well as comprehensive tables of global statistics submitted by countries and regions. Review of the Status of World Fishery Resources: Marine Fisheries: This document primarily revises the periodic review of the status of world marine fishery resources based on 1994 statistics. The introduction covers the limits of world fish production and the main trends in world fisheries since 1950. Attention has been drawn to the high-level development of more valuable marine resources. More detailed comments are provided for each FAO statistical region, discussing the main changes and trends in specific resources and the current fishery assessment strategies adopted to support fisheries management in each region. Dedicated chapters discuss global issues related to tuna and tuna-like species, while another special section addresses lanternfish as potential resources and the synchronization of global fish population changes. Summary tables for each FAO statistical region are provided, listing the historical and recent landings of major marine resources and an assessment of their current development status. This series consists of seven volumes.
