Features: The complexity, breadth, and social nature of environmental issues urgently call for environmental science research to reach a new platform, strengthening multidisciplinary and cross-departmental domestic and international collaboration. In 2002, the China Association for Science and Technology of the six western provinces and regions of China, along with relevant universities and research institutions, made the decision to hold an annual "International Academic Symposium on Environmental Issues and Sustainable Development in Western China." The inaugural conference was held in Xi'an in 2004, and this proceedings was published in advance. The proceedings include nearly 200 papers from researchers in 15 provinces (regions/cities) and 9 countries, offering multi-perspective analyses and discussions on environmental issues in Western China from six aspects: ecological environmental protection and the "Beautiful Mountains and Rivers" project, the Loess Plateau and ecological environment construction, sustainable development and utilization of water resources, research and prevention of sandstorms, desertification, and land degradation, sustainable development and utilization of tourism resources, and environmental protection and sustainable development.
Humans are products of the environment and, of course, also components of it. Since their birth, they have participated in environmental changes and have been deeply affected by them. With their unique curiosity and creativity, humans persistently observe, explore, and attempt to adapt to, or even alter, their surroundings, thereby driving their own development and progress. Science is the force that drives human progress, a pursuit of truth, a process of exploration, an embodiment of innovation, and an attitude of pragmatism. It cannot tolerate any falsehood or arrogance and is a cause that embraces inclusivity, encourages diverse voices, and fosters a flourishing of ideas. Only through mutual exchange and learning from each other can the essence of things be uncovered. The publication of this proceedings is precisely such a beneficial endeavor.
