Features: Zhao Xibo (1902-1979), a renowned Chinese medical scientist, styled Zongde, was from Beijing. Born into a family of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, he was nurtured by family traditions. He served as an apprentice at the Yuqing Tang pharmacy in Beijing's Andingmen and later became a disciple of the late Qing dynasty physician Wang Xuchu, studying under him for four years. In 1925, he began practicing medicine independently. Initially, he treated internal, gynecological, and pediatric conditions, later specializing in pediatrics. Due to his outstanding therapeutic results, he gained a reputation throughout Beijing. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, he attended the Beijing Traditional Chinese Medicine Refresher Course and later worked at the outpatient department of the hospital. In 1958, he became the director of the pediatric department at Xiyuan Hospital under the Chinese Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine and was sent to Mongolia for a year. In 1959, he was awarded by the Ministry of Health. In his clinical practice, he was meticulous and emphasized observation, excelling at discerning the progression of diseases and skillfully combining acupuncture, moxibustion, Tui Na (massage), scraping, and external treatments. He developed many proprietary Chinese herbal medicines, such as Qingjie Dan, Jianpi San, and Renjin San, donating all his secret formulas to the state, which remain effective to this day. He trained over ten apprentices, contributing significantly to the development of the pediatric department at Xiyuan Hospital. He authored works such as An Introduction to Traditional Chinese Medicine Pediatrics and Selected Clinical Experiences of Zhao Xibo in Pediatrics.
