Vaginal itching, is it trichomoniasis?

Patient's question:

In the past two months, I have been experiencing discomfort in my lower body. Although I clean the groin area daily, I still have vaginal itching every day, and there is a significant amount of vaginal discharge. I have used metronidazole for several days, but it hasn't improved. Therefore, I would like to ask the doctor if the vaginal itching is likely caused by trichomoniasis?

Doctor's answer:

Multiple occurrences of vaginal itching may be a symptom of vaginitis. Vaginitis can be caused by bacterial, trichomoniasis, or fungal infections. Generally, trichomoniasis vaginitis is primarily treated with metronidazole-based medications. If the effectiveness of metronidazole-based medications is poor, it is likely not trichomoniasis. At this stage, a routine vaginal discharge test can be conducted to identify the pathogen. Under the guidance of a local doctor, treatment can include vaginal douching combined with the insertion of suppositories.
