Content of the Book:
It's only been in recent years that Taiwanese director Ang Lee, mainland Chinese director Zhang Yimou, Hong Kong director John Woo, and actors like Jackie Chan and Chen Chong from both sides of the Taiwan Strait and mainland China have begun to carve out a space in the U.S. entertainment industry. Before that, the only early Chinese-American celebrities in the U.S. who could be counted were Anna May Wong and later Bruce Lee. During the 1940s to 1960s, the "Forbidden City" nightclub in San Francisco, where male and female performers once thrived, also tried to break into Hollywood but failed. However, their efforts and dedication in breaking down racial and cultural barriers deserve high praise from later generations of Chinese compatriots.
