Can birth control pills be taken outside of the menstrual period?

Patient's question:

I am living with my boyfriend, and usually, we don't use condoms. To avoid pregnancy, I bought Mifeprex (a breastfeeding-safe birth control pill) to take. I want to ask if it's okay to take Mifeprex outside of the menstrual period?

Doctor's answer:

Contraceptive pills can be taken outside of the menstrual period, but it is generally recommended to start taking them on the first day of the menstrual cycle, which is the first day of menstruation. It is best to take one tablet at approximately the same time each day, following the direction indicated by the arrow, for 21 consecutive days. Then, stop taking the medication for 7 days, and start the next pack on the 8th day of the break. However, breastfeeding effectiveness cannot be guaranteed for the first 7 days after starting the medication. It takes effect from the 8th day.
