In 1952, he was finally allowed to return to China and served as the Deputy Academic Director of the Marxist-Leninist Institute and the Deputy Director of the Central Translation Bureau. After the Cultural Revolution broke out, he could not escape the calamity and died by taking poison on July 30, 1967. In August 1980, the Party Central Committee held a memorial service for Chen Changhao, who had suffered unbearable humiliation.
