What is a right-sided corpus luteum cyst

Patient's question:

Yesterday I went to the hospital for a thorough examination, and the test report indicated a right corpus luteum cyst. I would like to ask what a right corpus luteum cyst means?

Doctor's answer:

A corpus luteum cyst is formed when a mature follicle remains in the ovary after menstruation. Initially, it may develop into a blood body, which gradually transforms into a cyst as blood is reabsorbed. Eventually, the fluid is reabsorbed, forming a corpus albicans. Generally, corpus luteum cysts disappear within 2-5 months unless you are pregnant, in which case they pose no interference.
If an ovarian cyst is detected in the early stages of pregnancy (within the first 3 months), treatment can increase the risk of miscarriage. If bilateral ovarian cysts are found during early pregnancy, surgical intervention that involves moving the uterus may also lead to miscarriage. For women diagnosed with an ovarian cyst after 28 weeks of pregnancy, surgery carries a high risk of preterm labor. If an ovarian cyst is detected in the late stages of pregnancy, it may obstruct labor, leading to urinary retention or obstructive dystocia.
