Features: This is a book that can be opened from two directions—one leads you into the world of "Absolutely Interesting," and the other takes you into the realm of "100% Humor." People open comic books, of course, to enjoy a light and pleasant humorous experience. I hope readers who approach it from different directions will discover the same humorous scenery but a different humorous experience.
Detailed Introduction: Book Review by Right Hand
"Absolutely Interesting" is a continuation of the book "Interesting." I continue to use the storytelling style of "Interesting," repeatedly telling an interesting comic theme on a double-page spread. Our lives are constantly filled with such themes, just as the phrase "interesting" is often on our lips. The interesting things depicted in the book are often things we hear, see, and experience. These interesting incidents make urban life vibrant and colorful. Collecting these "picture" themes is itself an interesting task—it always teaches me to view things with a dynamic perspective. Looking at things this way, it seems as though nothing is truly terrible or frustrating, because everything in the world is in motion. Once something moves past a certain point, frustration no longer belongs to you. Therefore, in this ever-evolving world, we should remain optimistic. Since the world is in motion, there will undoubtedly be more interesting things happening continuously. Thus, my collection of interesting things will go on indefinitely.
Collecting interesting stories and turning them into humor to make people laugh is, of course, a good thing. After all, city dwellers rarely have the chance to laugh, or when they do, it’s not always with genuine joy. However, making people laugh is definitely not an easy task. I worry that I might draw something stiff and uninteresting, presenting it as humor to the readers. The result would be like suddenly putting your hand in a reader’s ribs and tickling them—even if they manage a couple of dry laughs, it wouldn’t be a pleasant experience.
As a humor creator, I greatly admire the analogy FENG Xiaogang once made: the audience is the director’s opponent—they are strong, and you have to use every ounce of your strength to defeat them and gain their approval. Readers are the same. If you fail to accurately convey the humor of a situation or fail to give them an unexpected surprise, they will surely throw your work to the ground without hesitation. The creation of a comic with enduring humor can only happen by chance. Otherwise, you must go through a painful process of deep contemplation. Most of the time, I’m not "lucky" enough to have those "aha!" moments, so I can only struggle to think of ways to create humor.
Expressing humor is based on careful observation and thought. If you don’t have a comprehensive understanding of an event, you can’t describe it accurately. Comic humor can only become something memorable and meaningful after being carefully crafted—it shouldn’t be like fast-food humor that leaves readers troubled long after they’ve finished reading. Readers are always eagerly anticipating the chance to enjoy interesting comics, and this enthusiasm gives us, who want to create great comics, the strength to keep going.
When I put my comics together into a book, I realized that there are hardly any words in it from start to finish. I didn’t dare to hope that readers would develop any fondness for such a book with so few words, let alone become obsessed with it. But I believe that a good comic is full of vivid words—they just reside in the readers’ minds. If your comic is a key that unlocks those words, the resonance with the readers will bring you unexpected surprises. I secretly hope for a couple of such surprises. Life becomes vibrant because of expectations, and this process of waiting is absolutely interesting.
