Features: In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), "patterns" (zheng) and "diseases" (bing) are the foundation of clinical diagnosis and treatment. However, the naming of both "patterns" and "diseases" is neither strict nor standardized, with many names appearing arbitrary. This has caused numerous inconveniences in TCM's pattern differentiation and treatment. Today, as we strive to modernize TCM and achieve such a grand goal, substantial and arduous work is required. Among these efforts, unifying the conceptual definitions of "patterns" and "diseases" in TCM is undoubtedly an important task of an engineering nature. To achieve this, the first step should be a comprehensive of the "pattern names" and "disease names" passed down from ancient times, with a serious study of their historical academic value and clinical practical significance, in order to facilitate standardized modern clinical applications. The compilation of this book prioritizes the historical context, meticulously tracing the original sources of "patterns" and "diseases" and introducing excerpts from the original texts. Subsequently, appropriate annotations and interpretations are provided, followed by descriptions of modern clinical applications. Where possible, relevant discussions are included to correspond with Western medical diseases. The book contains nearly 10,000 ancient "pattern" and "disease" names, with a thorough effort to include all such names found in ancient medical texts or other reference works, without omitting any detail. The writing style is concise and easy to understand, though some obscure characters or terms are brieflyed, explained, annotated, and phonetically marked. All annotations and interpretations are primarily based on relevant historical documents, without the inclusion of the authors' "personal opinions." The book comprises approximately 1 million words.
Key Features of the Book:
1. Comprehensive historical literature, including all available "specialized" historical documents on "patterns" and "diseases" that have not been previously compiled.
2. A valuable reference book combining TCM theory and practice, aligning with the national advocacy of emphasizing fundamental theoretical research, thus holding significant academic value.
3. Broad applicability, suitable for TCM and Western medical practitioners, teaching and research personnel, and those studying TCM.
Value and Benefits of the Book:
1. A unique toolbook different from general TCM dictionaries, offering convenient access to information.
2. Scientific and social benefits, playing a crucial role in advancing TCM modernization, clinical treatment, and integrated Chinese and Western medicine research.
3. Collectible value. This is a "specialized" literature compilation with historical significance, making it highly valued and collected by libraries, archives, and institutions specializing in literature, history, and medicine.
Book Compilation Team:
1. Led by Professor Han Chengren, a doctoral supervisor with extensive experience in TCM theory teaching, research, and clinical practice.
2. Assisted by clinical directors and deputy chiefs of medicine with over 20 years of clinical experience, who are also responsible for the division of disciplines such as internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, pediatrics, ophthalmology, orthopedics, and dermatology, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the information.
3. Other contributors hold postgraduate or undergraduate degrees and are currently working in frontline medical practice.
Although primarily focused on theoretical organization, this book represents an engineering research effort aimed at serving medical practice. The authors hope to contribute meaningfully to medical development, TCM research, and the global advancement of TCM. However, due to limitations in expertise, errors and shortcomings are inevitable. We sincerely welcome valuable feedback from the academic community to further improve the book.
