What to do with cervical polyps

Patient's question:

1. Cervical polyp with glandular epithelial dysplasia.
2. Fibrosis of glands and stroma with asynchronous excretion. What does this mean? Is it what is known as cancer?

Doctor's answer:

When cervical polyps are discovered, they should be surgically removed. The removal of cervical polyps is relatively simple. First, the vagina and cervix are sterilized with povidone-iodine, and then forceps are used to grasp the base of the polyp stalk and cut it off. The procedure is painless. For larger polyps with thicker stalks, after removal, they can be treated with microwave electrocautery and medication. Postoperatively, anti-inflammatory medication should be used for 3 days. Polyps, regardless of size, should undergo a thorough pathological examination after removal, as cervical polyps have a 0.2%-0.4% risk of malignant transformation. It is crucial not to overlook this possibility. Additionally, although the polyp is removed, the inflammation in the cervix has not been completely eradicated. Therefore, in addition to the possibility of recurrence, patients should undergo regular follow-up examinations to prevent future issues. The daily treatment for cervical polyp patients primarily involves symptomatic treatment.
