Can uterine fibroids prevent pregnancy?

Patient's question:

I found out I have uterine fibroids over a year ago. Because the size of the fibroids is only 2 cm, the doctor recommended not to have surgery if it's not below 3 cm, and to opt for conservative treatment. Now I'm divorced and planning to get pregnant, but I don't know if this condition will affect my ability to conceive. I worry every day.

Doctor's answer:

Patients with uterine fibroids are not unable to get pregnant, but whether they can maintain the pregnancy is uncertain. 40% of patients with uterine fibroids experience repeated miscarriages. During pregnancy, uterine fibroids may grow faster due to slowed blood circulation and enhanced nutrient absorption. In other words, during the early stages of pregnancy, the growth rate of uterine fibroids increases. This is why some pregnant women, who are found to have uterine fibroids of only 2 to 3 centimeters during early pregnancy, may see them grow to about 10 centimeters by the later stages of pregnancy, and face the possibility of developing malignant inflammation.
