What to pay attention to when pregnant with uterine fibroids

Patient's question:

Doctor, I am now ready to have a child with my husband, but I have a uterine fibroid. I don't know if this will affect my pregnancy, and whether it will have an impact on my child after pregnancy. What should I do? Please advise.

Doctor's answer:

In women of childbearing age, about one in five has uterine fibroids, but most women are only discovered to have them during early pregnancy and their first prenatal checkup. Although the chance of encountering uterine fibroids during pregnancy is significant, severe complications rarely occur (less than 1%). Uterine fibroids can change during pregnancy—some may shift in position, some may grow in size, and some may develop "red degeneration" due to thrombosis of tissue after pregnancy, causing abdominal pain and uterine contractions. However, careful clinical observation and most studies confirm that uterine fibroids do not increase the risk of preterm labor.
