Features: This is a comprehensive and systematic work on the study of modern Chinese phonology during the Ming and Qing dynasties, with an integrated nature. The representative materials discussed in the book, in addition to the well-known works such as Hongwu Zhengyun, Sisheng Tongjie, and Dengyun Tujing, also include rare and valuable books like the Romanized Gospel of the New Testament preserved in London and the Harmonious Sound Phonology preserved in Taipei. The former was obtained from the author's teacher, Professor Huang Diancheng, while the latter was sourced from Professor Lin Qingxun's monograph at National Sun Yat-sen University in Kaohsiung. Based on a thorough grasp of the materials, the author provides a relatively detailed segmentation and description of the Ming and Qing official vernacular phonology, separately discussing the Ming and Qing sounds, which are further divided into two stages each. The book describes and examines the basic features and historical evolution of the Ming and Qing official vernacular phonology. It also conducts a horizontal synchronic comparison between the official vernacular phonology and the representative dialects of the base dialects (Northern and Southern dialects), revealing the differences between the two.
