Features: This book is one of the key projects of Shandong University's "Project 211." At the time, the decision was made to conduct research on this topic with the aim of consolidating the strengths of lexical and etymological studies at our university. Under the guidance of modern linguistic and lexical theories, we attempted to explore the historical and contemporary aspects of Chinese vocabulary. Although lexical and etymological studies are distinct disciplines, they are intrinsically linked. As research in lexical studies progresses, it often requires us to trace the origins of phenomena to provide comprehensive explanations. Only by doing so can we delve deeper into the subject and present a thorough understanding. To achieve this, the methods and findings of etymology must be employed, and etymology itself also faces the need for further in-depth research and development. Building upon existing research, etymology must also pioneer new directions and advancements. It not only needs to incorporate modern linguistic theories but also, while tracing origins, must explore the evolution of language. By utilizing current etymological achievements and methods, we strive to make new contributions to the comprehensive study of Chinese vocabulary development. Based on these considerations, we selected this topic and embarked on a specialized exploration, aiming to bridge the gap between past and present.
