Features: Each unit includes four major sections:
Listening (Listening): Provides cultural annotations (Cultural notes) and discusses cultural differences. Helps students understand and overcome communication barriers, avoiding communication errors. Accompanied by audio recordings for listening practice.
Reading (Reading): Offers several texts centered around the unit theme, increasing information and language input. For these texts, teachers can choose:
(1) Assign students to study them as homework to allow more time for "speaking" in class;
(2) Select some for in-class reading and discussion, fostering creative language use to achieve communicative goals and develop fluency.
The Notes section at the end of each unit is designed for convenience and learning effectiveness, with most entries provided in both English and Chinese. English-only explanations are used when the English definition is straightforward or when learners are familiar with synonyms. Chinese-only explanations are used when English definitions would be confusing.
Writing (Writing): Combines cross-cultural contexts to emphasize the communicative purpose of writing, reinforcing reviewed content, developing logical thinking, and enhancing oral coherence.
Additionally, each unit is equipped with related vocabulary and expressions (Related words and expressions) to expand students' lexical reserves related to the unit theme. Useful designs include humor, riddles, and puns related to the theme to boost learning interest. Famous quotes are included to deepen understanding of the unit theme, encouraging students to memorize, use in communicative activities, or organize discussions and debates. Some units also feature English songs to liven up the atmosphere, improve language learning interest, refine pronunciation and intonation, especially rhythm, assimilation, elision, and liaison. Song lyrics are relevant to the unit and include fill-in-the-blank exercises for listening practice and deeper thematic understanding.
At the end of the book, there are five appendices for reference by textbook users: common functional sentence patterns, exclamations, interjections, tongue twisters, and classroom activity formats.
