Features: The New University Romanian is a teaching material compiled for the undergraduate Romanian program at Beijing Foreign Studies University. It consists of four volumes, intended for use in the foundational stage of teaching. As a non-common language, the teaching of Romanian in China began in 1956, and currently includes undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels, becoming a valuable supplement to China's foreign language education. Our consistent goal has been to continuously improve the teaching and research standards of the Romanian program in higher education, cultivating high-quality talents for national development and the advancement of China-Romania relations. In recent years, to adapt our work to the development of the times and the requirements of cultivating Romanian talents, we have conducted a series of explorations and adjustments in professional teaching. To some extent, this textbook also reflects such educational reforms. Therefore, during the writing process, we have strived to achieve the following points:
1. Practicality and Modernity of Content. The sentence patterns, texts, examples, and exercises are meticulously designed to closely align with real-life communication needs, making them easy to master and apply. The texts cover various aspects such as history, geography, politics, economy, culture and arts, tourism, sports, and folklore, fully reflecting the characteristics of the target country while also incorporating the cultural and humanistic features of China, particularly in Beijing. Additionally, they include content from humanities and natural sciences, touching on modern science and technology, human-nature relationships, environmental protection, and e-commerce.
2. Systematic and Professional Knowledge. In the treatment of grammatical topics, difficulties are dispersed, presented in a progressive and alternating manner across different sections. Through shallow and deep dual cycles in the first and second volumes and the third and fourth volumes, students are solidly grounded in the basic skills of using Romanian. Key vocabulary is explained in detail with abundant practice, and the exercises are designed to be diverse, covering systematic training in listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation. Starting from the third volume, each lesson also includes concise introductions to linguistics and modern Romanian theory to enrich students' knowledge and enhance their academic competence.
3. Accuracy and Standardization of Language. The language used in the textbook adheres to modern Romanian norms, and the writing follows the orthographic rules promulgated by the Romanian Academy in 1993. Our overall vision is to use this textbook as the core material for the foundational stage, enabling students to grasp Romanian basics within 2 to 3 years, followed by advanced courses in specialized fields using Romanian. Upon graduation, students will become professionals with a solid language foundation, high humanistic literacy, and innovative awareness.
Professor Feng Zhichen led the compilation of this textbook and oversaw the overall review and approval of all four volumes. It should be noted that during the writing process, we referred to some Romanian textbooks and publications, incorporating and adapting their content. Considering the primary focus of this book is language teaching, we did not list all sources individually. We sincerely thank the relevant authors for their contributions! Professor Silviu Niculescu, a Romanian expert teaching at Beijing Foreign Studies University, worked closely with us to meticulously review the Romanian portions of the entire book. Professor Pang Jiyang and Dong Xixiao also provided valuable feedback during the trial use of the manuscript. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to them! The writing and publication of this textbook would not have been possible without the strong support of the Research Office at Beijing Foreign Studies University, the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, and the Department of East European Languages. We express our special thanks to them!
Finally, we sincerely hope that teachers, students, and other readers who use this textbook will point out any shortcomings for improvement.
