Features: One of the guiding principles of this book is to strive for a broad and comprehensive coverage within the possible scope, enabling readers to gain as complete, dynamic, and evolving an understanding of Russian speech culture as possible. In terms of historical span, the book includes materials from various historical periods, including the 19th century, the time of the October Revolution, the Soviet period, and the period before and after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. In terms of topic types, it encompasses a variety of genres such as political speeches, ceremonial speeches, academic speeches, and courtroom speeches. The latter point is considered particularly important. To help readers appreciate the masterpieces included in the book, each speech is accompanied by two reference materials. The first is background information about the speaker; the second is our attempt at an analysis of the speech. Any speech can be appreciated and savored from different perspectives, and our analysis focuses specifically on the manifestation of persuasive strategies in the speech activity. Since ancient Greece, the art of rhetoric has been defined as the art of persuasion. Persuasion can be understood as the speaker reporting what they know, expressing their opinions and emotions, with the aim of influencing and moving the audience to make corresponding judgments and take corresponding actions. To provide readers with more and richer reading materials, in addition to the selected speeches, the book also includes several supplementary pieces in an appendix, with categories largely corresponding to those of the selected speeches and a similar arrangement principle. All the speeches in the appendix are not analyzed, and readers can independently interpret them by referring to the analysis model in the main text.
