Features: This book collects 45 articles and encyclopedia entries on British literature that I have published and unpublished since the 1940s to the early 1990s. These varied chapters record my insights and experiences in learning and researching British literature, as well as introducing some methods and practices. They are primarily informative and instructional, hoping to help young readers better understand and appreciate certain British writers and works. For example, they introduce writers such as Chaucer, Spenser, Shakespeare, Fielding, Byron, and analyze and evaluate works like the Old English epic Beowulf, Shakespeare's sonnets, and tragedies Hamlet and Macbeth, as well as Byron's Don Juan. When discussing writers and works, I attempt to apply the historical materialist perspective, highlighting both the social significance and historical role of the works while conducting detailed linguistic and artistic analyses of their texts, striving to demonstrate the unity of content and form. Additionally, as my profession is a university teacher, I place great emphasis on the educational and inspirational functions of literature. I aim to help young readers develop a positive and uplifting worldview through my discussions of writers and works. If readers are interested, I would like to recommend another book I wrote, Wax and Tallow: Insights into Western Literature (Peking University Press, 1995). This book collects more of my articles on British literature, including Adjectives in Chaucer's Poetry, English and Scottish Folk Songs, Shakespeare's Richard II, Shakespeare's As You Like It, Swift's Satirical Prose, Dickens's David Copperfield, and Twentieth-Century British and American Literary Criticism. British literature is one of the important sources of knowledge and enlightenment. I hope my small book can guide young readers to the source of this inexhaustible river of wisdom.
