Features: Xie Guozheng (1901-1982), a renowned historian, was from Anyang, Henan. His courtesy name was Gangzhu, and he also used the pseudonyms Guati An, etc. He graduated from Tsinghua University's Institute of Chinese Studies in 1926 and served as an assistant to Liang Qichao, assisting in the compilation of The Great Dictionary of Chinese Books. From 1932, he taught at institutions such as Central University, Henan University, and Yunnan University. In 1949, he became a professor at Nankai University, and in 1957, he moved to Beijing to serve as a researcher at the Institute of History, Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1981, he was appointed as an advisor to the State Council's Ancient Texts Compilation Group. During his time at Tsinghua University's Institute of Chinese Studies, Xie Guozheng studied ancient Chinese culture and history under masters such as Liang Qichao, Wang Guowei, Chen Yinque, Meng Sen, Li Ji, and Cao Yuanren, deeply influenced by the influence of the Bingyin Studio. His interest in the Ming and Qing dynasties and bibliography led him to dedicate his life to research and academic achievements in these two fields. Since publishing A Study of the Servant Uprising in the Late Ming Dynasty in 1925, Xie Guozheng wrote extensively throughout his life. His major works include A Study of Late Ming Historical Records, A Study of Party and Society Movements During the Ming-Qing Transition, Scholarly Trends in the Late Ming and Early Qing, A Brief History of the Southern Ming Dynasty, Notes on Ming-Qing Jottings, A Study of Gu Tinglin's Thought, and A Study of Huang Liyong's Thought, among others. This book is a collection of Xie Guozheng's individual essays and notes on the Ming and Qing dynasties, compiled and organized by his students.
