Features: During the three historical periods of the Ming Dynasty's rise and decline, painting also developed in three corresponding stages. Each stage gave rise to dominant schools in the art world and renowned masters. This volume includes 37 famous or anonymous painters from the early Ming period and 97 works. During this period, the art world was largely dominated by the [Academy Style] painting, which inherited the techniques of Li, Jian, Ma, and Xia from the Southern Song Dynasty, driven by the imperial court's preference. The Zhe School master Da Jin in landscape painting and Bian Jingjing in flower-and-bird painting were representative figures. Other notable artists include Guo Chun, Li Zai, Shang Xi, and Ni Duan. Even Wang Lu, who was not a court painter, used the theme of ink bamboo, favored by Ma and Xia, when depicting Huashan, embodying the moral aspirations of the scholar-officials and showcasing distinctive characteristics. However, this period also saw Sun Long, who blended color and ink with bold brushwork, exploring new directions for the specialization and individualization of brush-and-ink techniques.
