Chen Xiuyuan's Medical Books, consisting of sixteen volumes, are a widely popular and deeply influential set of books for teaching and self-study in TCM. Since their publication in the early 19th century, they have been revised twice, covering content from basic theory to clinical practice, from entry-level to popularization, and from advanced study to deepening understanding. The text is clear and concise, the rhymes are widely recognized, the theory is innovative, and the methods are practical. This volume includes the newly annotated editions of Chen Xiuyuan's Essentials of the Annotations of the Lingshu and Shanghan Beiji. Essentials of the Annotations of the Lingshu and Shanghan Beiji is a collection of annotations by Chen Xiuyuan to enlighten learners of the Lingshu and Suwen. The book consists of twelve volumes, employing a classified research method to divide the content of the Lingshu and Suwen into ten categories—Dao Sheng (Daoist Creation), Zang Xiang (Organ Manifestations), Jing Luo (Meridians), Yun Qi (Five Elements and Climate), Wang Se (Pulse Observation), Zhen Hou (Examination and Diagnosis, including Listening and Inquiry), Shen Zhi (Treatment Assessment), Sheng Si (Life and Death), Mai Zhen (Pulse Diagnosis), and Bing Ji (Pathogenesis)—according to their different natures. It elucidates ancient teachings concisely and comprehensively, benefiting later generations by providing them with essential knowledge, making it an excellent reference book for learning basic TCM theory. Essentials of the Annotations of the Shanghan Beiji is a collection of insights and reflections by Chen Xiuyuan after his careful study of the Shanghan Beiji. The book consists of four volumes, selecting 160 commonly used herbs from the 365 listed in the Shanghan Beiji (divided into high, middle, and low grades), and combining the clinical experiences of medical practitioners and individuals in using these herbs to elaborate on the original text. The book integrates the principles of the Neijing and the methods of the Shanghan, making it a valuable resource for studying herbal medicine and clinical prescriptions. This book was first published in the eighth year of the Jiaqing reign (1803).
