Chen Xiuyuan's sixteen medical books are a widely popular and influential set of books for teaching and self-study in TCM. Since their publication in the early 19th century, they have been reprinted and revised multiple times, covering content from basic theory to clinical practice, from entry-level to popularization, and from advanced study to deepening knowledge. The text is clear and concise, the rhymes are widely known, the theory is innovative, and the methods are practical. This volume includes the newly annotated editions of Chen Xiuyuan's "Essentials of the Annotations of the Lingshu and Suwen" and "Annotations on the Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica." The "Essentials of the Annotations of the Lingshu and Suwen" was compiled by Chen Xiuyuan to inspire future learners of the Lingshu and Suwen. The book consists of twelve volumes, employing a classified research method to organize the content of the Lingshu and Suwen into ten categories based on their nature: Way of Life, Zang-Xiang (Organs and Manifestations), Meridians, Qi and Climate, Inspection of Complexion, Diagnosis (including Listening to Sounds and Inquiry), Treatment Assessment, Life and Death, Pulse Diagnosis, and Pathogenesis. It elucidates ancient teachings in a concise manner, benefiting future learners by providing a solid foundation, making it an excellent reference book for studying basic TCM theory. The "Annotations on the Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica" is a compilation of Chen Xiuyuan's insights and reflections after carefully studying the Shennong's Classic of Materia Medica. The book consists of four volumes, selecting 160 commonly used herbs from the 365 listed in the Basic Canon (upper, middle, and lower grades). It combines the clinical experiences of and individuals in using these herbs to elaborate on the original text. The book integrates the principles of the Neijing and the methods of the Shanghan (Treatise on Cold Damage), making it a valuable resource for studying herbal medicine and clinical prescriptions. This book was first published in the eighth year of the Jiaqing reign (1803).
