Publish Date: 1998-07-01
Features: This book is one of the four series featuring famous classical Chinese literary masterpieces and contemporary paintings. The other three are Poetry and Painting: Three Hundred Poems of the Tang Dynasty, Ci and Painting: Three Hundred Ci Poems of the Tang and Song Dynasties, and Prose and Painting: Two Hundred Ancient Prose Pieces. Yuanqu (quyi) is one of the most accomplished treasures in Chinese literature, comprising both qu (a form of song) and jucu (dramatic qu). It gathers the essence of previous generations of literature, characterized by its sharpness, boldness, and inclusiveness of both refined and popular styles. It represents another peak in the development of traditional Chinese rhyming literature and has been widely appreciated by readers throughout history. Since the Ming and Qing dynasties, collections and selections of Yuanqu have been published. This time, we present Qu and Painting: Three Hundred Yuanqu Pieces, focusing on its appreciation and collection value. It leverages the complementary function of traditional Chinese poetry (ci/qu) and painting, aiming for a rich integration of text and images with elegant and magnificent design.
To achieve this, our publishing house used the 1958 edition of Yuanqu Xuan (Selection of Yuanqu) published by Zhonghua Book Company and the 1986 edition of Quan Yuan Sanqu (Complete Yuan Qu) as the basis, consulting other editions, and selecting 310 qu pieces from various authors to reflect the general development of Yuanqu. We have specially invited renowned contemporary painters across the country to create exquisite paintings for each Yuanqu piece, allowing the emotions of the qu to harmonize with the artistic expression of the paintings. Additionally, we have included insightful and concise commentaries written by classical literature experts, ensuring that this outstanding literary heritage of Yuanqu shines with a new brilliance in the modern era.
