Features: Huang Zhou (1925-1997), originally named Liang Gantang, was a native of Li County, Hebei Province. He began studying Chinese painting under Zhao Wangyun at a young age. He served as the Deputy Director of the Chinese Painting Research Institute, the Vice President of the Chinese Research Institute, the Director of the Yan Huang Art Museum, and a member of the China Artists Association. Huang Zhou once said, "Artistic creation requires continuous effort—challenging life, tradition, and artistic cultivation. There is no end to learning, no end to art!" This spirit of relentless pursuit is the secret to Huang Zhou's success. Huang Zhou believed that sketching should also be combined with the innovation of Chinese painting's brush and ink techniques. Chinese painting artists should use brush pens more often for sketching. The techniques of pencil drawing are different from those of brush painting. My techniques for charcoal drawing are also different when applied to brush painting. I draw charcoal paintings using ink and wash methods, but there is still a distance. Since I paint ink and wash paintings, sketching should also be done as much as possible with ink and brush pens. Just like practicing martial arts in Peking Opera or practicing the piano for musicians, the techniques on and off stage should be consistent.
