Features: Traditional pavilion-and-terrace landscape painting, exquisite brushwork, long-standing tradition, solid foundation—it is an important branch of Chinese painting. However, since the Song and Yuan dynasties, literati painting flourished and became the mainstream of the art world, leading to the decline of landscape painting techniques, which were regarded as mere craftsmanship and denigrated. The status of landscape painters gradually diminished, and fewer people took up the practice. The contributions of the Yuan brothers lie in their defiance of societal prejudice, reviving the declining landscape painting tradition and elevating it to new heights. Examining their works, both in subject matter and artistic technique, reveals clear innovation and significant progress:
(1) In terms of subject matter, the pavilion-and-terrace landscape paintings by Yuan Jiang and his son can be broadly categorized into three types: one is landscape painting based on real scenes. Another is fictionalized mountain-and-water pavilion-and-terrace landscapes. The third is works by the Yuan brothers that imitate the poetic essence of Tang Dynasty poetry. Additionally, the Yuan brothers also painted flowers, birds, fish, and insects.
(2) In terms of technique, the Yuan brothers, while inheriting the traditions of their predecessors, also innovated. Guided by the belief that art lies in innovation, they developed the versatile "ghost-face" texture technique and placed human-made pavilions in ethereal, otherworldly landscapes, adding a sense of wonder and charm to their works, which garnered widespread acclaim.
