Features: Woody flowers refer to woody plants that bloom or bear fruits beautifully, with a focus on ornamental flowers and fruits. They include shrubs and trees, which can be evergreen or deciduous.
Shrubs are typically low-growing trees with no distinct main trunk, branching out near the ground into many stems, forming an irregular crown similar to a cluster. Examples include Hydrangea macrophylla, Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, Hybrid Roses, Fuchsia, Osmanthus fragrans, Plumbago auriculata, Double-flowered Hydrangea paniculata, Calycanthus, and Serissa foetida. Shrubs taller than 2 meters are classified as large shrubs, while those shorter than 2 meters are small shrubs.
Trees are generally characterized by a single, distinct main trunk that begins to branch off at a considerable height above the ground (around chest level). Their crowns have a certain shape. Examples include Gardenia jasminoides, Syzygium javanicum, Salix matsudana, Melaleuca leucadendron, Catalpa bungei, Prunus persica, Prunus mume, Malus halliana, Cherry blossoms, and Camellia species. Trees taller than 18 meters are classified as large trees, those between 9 and 18 meters as medium trees, and those shorter than 9 meters as small trees.
Woody flowers are widely used in landscape design. Shrub flowers can be used for garden or road beautification, hedging, flower bed arrangements, or container planting. Tree species can serve as garden trees or street trees. During blooming season, the trees are covered in abundant flowers, displaying a dazzling array of colors, making them important ornamental plants. In terms of cultivation and management, most flowering woody plants require ample sunlight. Those that prefer high temperatures (optimal growth temperature of 20–30°C) are suitable for planting in flat areas across Southern China. Those that prefer warm or cool temperatures (optimal growth temperature of 10–25°C) are more suitable for cultivation in mid-to-high-altitude cool mountainous regions in Southern China.
This book collects 195 species of woody flowers, combined with the varieties from Woody Flowers 196 Species (Volume 7), nearly covering all currently cultivated woody flowers in China, including newly introduced varieties.
