Features: Yuan Jiang, a famous painter of the Qing Dynasty. His style name was Wen. He was from Jiangdu, Jiangsu (now Yangzhou). He excelled in architectural painting. He was skilled in landscapes and architectural structures, with intricate and vibrant styles, capable of both rough and detailed work. He initially studied under Qiu Shizhou and later, in middle age, imitated ancient paintings, creating his own unique path based on traditional foundations. He lived during the Kangxi era. In his later years, he was commissioned by Shanxi salt merchants in Yangzhou to travel to Shanxi and paint along the Grand Canal. His works are more widely found in the northern regions. His landscapes were primarily influenced by the Song Dynasty painter Yan Ciping; his rock formations often featured the "ghost face" texture; his architectural paintings were heavily inspired by Gu Zhongshu, known for their meticulous and rigorous detail. In his later years, he focused on ancient palace gardens, such as Snow Over Liang Garden. This painting draws inspiration from the Liang Garden described by Mei Chong and Jiang Yan in their "Ode to Liang Garden" and "Ode to the Rabbit Garden," showcasing the grandeur of palace gardens. Another notable work is the scroll Scenic Views of Dong Garden, executed in a long-roll format with exquisite architectural painting, proportionally accurate buildings, lifelike trees and rocks, and deep layers of mountain shadows and water reflections. Scenic Views of Dong Garden is considered one of his masterpieces. Other works include Autumn Moon in the Han Palace and others.
Yuan Yao (birth and death years unknown), style name Zhaodao, was from Jiangdu (now Jiangsu, Yangzhou). He was Yuan Jiang's nephew. He was skilled in landscapes, architectural structures, and architectural painting. His style was meticulous and ornate, similar to Yuan Jiang, with some works even surpassing Yuan Jiang's quality. Occasionally, he painted flowers and birds, which were also excellent. He created Twelve Scenic Views of Mount Lishan in the 11th year of the Qianlong era and The Palace of Aparajita in the 45th year of the Qianlong era, both now housed in the Nanjing Museum. He was active primarily in the mid-Qianlong era.
