It is a classic English learning course specifically designed for students in non-English-speaking countries worldwide. The course has been widely used and praised around the world, especially in many Asian countries, and is now republished with expansions and updates by the authors. At the time when China joined the World Trade Organization and successfully bid for the Olympics, China Electric Power Press and the world-renowned Pearson Education Group jointly launched this comprehensive English course focused on oral English learning, which drives reading, writing, and comprehensive mastery of American English through listening and speaking. The course organically integrates authentic daily-life topics, diverse communication methods, and versatile grammar exercises, with a student-centered approach. Through a progressive design, it guides students on a fast track to mastering English, offering readers an exciting, dynamic, and imaginative English learning journey.
This course is divided into 4 levels. According to the standards of the Mainstream English Language Training Project (MELTP) developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS), each level of the course is scientifically positioned. Taking the core component, the Student Textbooks, as an example:
- Student Textbook (1) – Beginning High: Designed for learners with intermediate-level proficiency or higher. Upon completion, students can master basic communication skills and expressions for work and daily life through extensive practice in real-life scenarios, meeting emergency needs in both professional and personal contexts.
- Student Textbook (2) – Intermediate Low: Designed for learners with a beginner-level intermediate proficiency. Upon completion, students can acquire communication skills and content needed for job hunting and daily interactions, meeting the needs of survival in new environments and participating in basic social and recreational activities.
- Student Textbook (3) – Intermediate High: Designed for learners with intermediate-level proficiency or higher. Upon completion, students can master communication skills for vocational training and independent living, read various written expressions, and engage in further exchanges with native English speakers, participating in their social and recreational activities.
- Student Textbook (4) – Advanced Low: Designed for learners with a beginner-level advanced proficiency. Upon completion, students can achieve communicative proficiency equivalent to that of general education in English-speaking countries, independently handle job hunting and daily work requirements, and engage in fluent daily conversations with native English speakers, making their interactions and recreational activities more harmonious and natural.
To facilitate self-study for Chinese readers, the Student Textbooks (1–4) are accompanied by Student’s Guides (1–4), compiled by English teaching professionals from universities such as Peking University and Tsinghua University who have years of experience in teaching English. These guides fully consider the characteristics of Chinese learners and add content such as translated texts, vocabulary notes, pronunciation tips, grammar tips, language and culture insights, and grammar summaries to each Student Textbook, helping readers overcome potential difficulties in understanding, grammar structures, and pronunciation rules. Additionally, to aid in vocabulary review and consolidation, an index of all vocabulary is included at the end of each book, and word association and categorized vocabulary are added in each unit to address challenges in memorization.
All exercises in the course are accompanied by answers and detailed explanations in the original text.
ExpressWays Second Edition includes the following components:
