Does painless abortion require uterine clearance?

Patient's question:

I just got pregnant for over a month, but due to some personal reasons, I can't keep the child now. I want to have an abortion surgery and have consulted the hospital about the painless abortion procedure. My friend said that if I do it, I might need a D&C. Is a D&C necessary for a painless abortion? Is a D&C dangerous?

Doctor's answer:

Anesthesia-induced abortion is used to terminate intrauterine pregnancies within 70 weeks. The likelihood of needing a second uterine clearance after anesthesia-induced abortion is relatively low, but it cannot be completely ruled out. After the uterine aspiration procedure, a follow-up examination of the uterine cavity is required 7-14 days later. If there is residual tissue, and if it is significant, uterine clearance may be necessary if required. Therefore, it is advisable to choose a private secondary-level hospital or higher with a reliable surgical technique to effectively reduce the risk of incomplete miscarriage and prevent a second uterine clearance.
