How long does bleeding stop after medication abortion?

Patient's question:

I am a girl, and my period didn't come last week, so I took a test and found out I was pregnant. But my boyfriend doesn't want this child, and he told me to have an abortion. Because it's still early in the pregnancy, I decided to have medication abortion, as it is said to cause less harm to the body. Now, it has been 3 days since I had the medication abortion, and I am still bleeding. How long does it usually take for the bleeding to stop after medication abortion?

Doctor's answer:

Under normal circumstances, vaginal bleeding after medication abortion usually stops completely within about a week, and at the latest within two weeks. If vaginal bleeding persists for more than two weeks, the possibility of retained products of conception, poor uterine involution, or intrauterine infection is relatively high, and a thorough examination with ultrasound is necessary for confirmation. If the ultrasound suggests a significant amount of retained tissue, further uterine aspiration may be required. During this period, sexual activity and tub baths should be avoided, and close monitoring of abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding is recommended.
