I want to ask what uterine fibroids are.

Patient's question:

It might be menopause this year. Recently, many of my menstrual cycles have been somewhat abnormal. They come about every 20 days, and each lasts for about 6 days to clean up. The blood flow is also quite heavy. In the past few days, I've noticed that a lot of yellowish liquid is being discharged from the vagina, and it has a foul odor. After a thorough examination at the hospital, they said it's uterine fibroids.

Doctor's answer:

Uterine fibroids are the most common benign tumors of the female reproductive organs. They are typically classified into subserosal fibroids, intramural fibroids, submucosal fibroids, cervical fibroids, or broad ligament fibroids, among others, and can present with clinical manifestations such as excessive menstrual bleeding, lower abdominal masses, or difficulty urinating and defecating. In women over the age of 50, approximately 20% suffer from uterine fibroids. However, due to their slow development, they often lack clinical symptoms and are not diagnosed, remaining undetected throughout their lives without the need for treatment. Hormonal therapy is suitable for perimenopausal patients with fibroids that are not significantly large and whose menstrual bleeding has not markedly increased.
