Features: With the continuous deepening of China's economic system reform, especially the determination of the goal of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects, the social security system has increasingly become a focal point of attention for the whole society, and related research has gradually received high from the academic community. The study of social security systems in Western countries is an important field of social security system research and an important way to summarize and learn from the experience and lessons of Western countries' social security systems. The development of social security systems in Western countries has the following characteristics: First, the development of social security systems in Western countries has a historical nature, having undergone a long historical evolution process of establishment, development, change, difficulties, and reform. Second, the development of social security systems in Western countries has a phased nature, with the different characteristics of social and economic development in different periods in Western countries making the development and changes of their social security systems show phased characteristics. Last, the development of social security systems in Western countries has national characteristics, which are closely related to the socio-economic and cultural traditions of each country, as well as directly related to the development and evolution of their social security systems themselves. The construction of China's social security system must be based on China's basic national conditions, but it must also learn from the experience and lessons of the development of social security systems in Western countries. This requires us to study the social security systems of Western countries to study the current situation, but also to study the development and evolution, and to study the characteristics of different periods, and even more to study national characteristics and their causes. Only in this way can we fully and systematically understand the general laws of the development of social security systems in Western countries and the national characteristics of the development of social security systems in different countries, so that we can provide more systematic and specific references for the construction of China's social security system. The study of the development and evolution of social security systems in Western countries is the foundation of the study of social security systems in Western countries. The social security systems in Western countries have reached their current level and level after a long period of development and evolution. It can be said that all aspects of the current situation of social security systems in Western countries, including the institutional composition, basic principles, national characteristics, institutional models, ideological theories, security concepts, problems faced, and reform paths, are directly related to the development and evolution of this system itself, and answers can be found from the systematic study of the development and evolution of this system. Based on the above practical purposes and academic significance, we organized scholars at home and abroad who have long engaged in the study of social security systems in Western countries. On the basis of a systematic study of the development and evolution of social security systems in major Western countries, we wrote this series of "Development of Western Social Security Systems." Currently, the academic community in China has achieved some important results in the study of social security systems in Western countries, but there are still some shortcomings in this research work, mainly reflected in two points: , it tends to focus more on the current situation of social security systems in Western countries, lacking a systematic study of the development and evolution of social security systems in Western countries; second, it tends to focus more on the study of social security systems in Western countries from an economic perspective, lacking a multi-angle, interdisciplinary study of social security systems in Western countries. The current situation of social security systems in Western countries is closely linked to the long-term development and change of this system. Social security systems are not just economic issues; they involve many fields of social development, and the study of social security systems must necessarily involve many disciplines, and it is an interdisciplinary research. "Development of Western Social Security Systems" takes the development and evolution of social security systems in Western countries as the main research content, comprehensively uses research methods from multiple disciplines such as social security studies, economics, sociology, political science, history, and ethics, conducts an in-depth study of the development and evolution process of social security systems in Western countries, analyzes the characteristics and causes of the development of social security systems in different historical stages in Western countries, and systematically summarizes the experience and lessons of the development and evolution of social security systems in Western countries. "Development of Western Social Security Systems" selects the development and evolution of social security systems in major Western countries as the research object. The United Kingdom and Sweden are representative countries of the welfare state model of social security systems, while Germany and the United States are representative countries of the social insurance model of social security systems. Each social security system model selects two representative countries, which not only helps to better reflect the development characteristics of different social security system models but also helps to compare the social security systems of different countries with the same social security system model. This is beneficial to discovering the differences between social security systems in countries with different social security system models, as well as the differences between social security systems in countries with the same social security system model, thereby better reflecting the national characteristics of social security systems in Western countries. Japan is not only a developed country with a unique social security system but also an Asian country with many similar historical and cultural traditions to China. The study of the development of Japan's social security system has a more direct reference and enlightenment significance for the establishment and development of China's social security system. As the result of collaborative research by multiple scholars, each book in "Development of Western Social Security Systems" will reflect its own unique style, which is inevitable and also what we advocate. However, the main research content of this series is the development and evolution of social security systems in Western countries and their background and impact. It systematically studies the overall process of the establishment, development, and reform of social security systems in Western countries; profoundly reveals the interrelationship between the development of social security systems in Western countries and economic, social, and political changes; conducts an in-depth study of the phased characteristics and background of the development and evolution of social security systems in different periods in Western countries; systematically elaborates on the development and evolution of the basic principles, content composition, institutional models, and theoretical concepts of social security systems in Western countries; conducts an in-depth analysis of the difficulties faced by social security systems in Western countries, different reform paths, and their causes; objectively evaluates the effects, roles, experience, and lessons of social security systems in Western countries; and systematically summarizes the reference and enlightenment significance of the development of social security systems in Western countries for the construction of China's social security system. After nearly three years of joint efforts from all sides, "Development of Western Social Security Systems" can finally be presented to the readers today. This is first and foremost due to the support, care, and assistance given to this project by the China Labor and Social Security Press! To be honest, the study of the development and evolution of social security systems in Western countries is not a fashionable topic in the current field of social security research in China. The China Labor and Social Security Press being able to include this series in its publishing plan is not only a great encouragement to all the authors of the series but also a passionate support for the basic research work of China's social security system. The publication of "Development of Western Social Security Systems" also benefits from the care and support of many scholars in China's social security academic community. Their encouragement and assistance have given us the confidence and determination to conduct research on the development of Western social security systems. In particular, some important research achievements in the study of Western social security systems in China in recent years have provided valuable insights for the systematic study of the development of Western social security systems in this series. Here, on behalf of all the authors of the series, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the scholars who support and care about this series! Of course, the writing and publication of "Development of Western Social Security Systems" directly benefit from the hard work and close cooperation of all the authors. We were strangers to each other, brought together by a common belief and pursuit, not only walking together but also encouraging and cooperating closely. Many interesting stories that happened during this period will be written into our life chapters along with the hard work and sweat we have invested. Here, I would also like to express my deep gratitude to all the authors for your joint efforts and close cooperation!
