Brief Introduction:
This textbook is designed based on the language skills requirements outlined in the "Teaching Syllabus for Senior English Majors in Higher Education Institutions," aiming to help students quickly understand and comprehend original English TV programs directly received.
With the increasing popularity of satellite television, English major students in Chinese higher education institutions (and secondary vocational schools), as well as English enthusiasts, now have the opportunity to directly watch TV programs from English-speaking countries. This is undoubtedly a positive development, but it also presents a challenge.
Due to past limitations in communication technology, Chinese students, despite years of English study, still lack intuitive understanding and exposure to real-life English-speaking contexts. They struggle with different accents, paces of speech, habitual or almost fixed expressions in various settings, the cultural backgrounds, thematic characteristics, and stylistic nuances of different expressions, and even the range and usage frequency of vocabulary in general situations. As a result, improving communicative competence becomes like building a tree without roots, and the Communicative Language Teaching approach inevitably faces difficulties. Many foreign language experts, as well as ambitious students, have long recognized the challenges in language expression and are deeply concerned about this issue. With the advancement of international communication equipment, favorable conditions and opportunities have emerged to address this problem. Many insightful individuals have come to realize that fully utilizing this modern tool to bring a breakthrough in Chinese English teaching is not only possible but also imperative.
