Features: The Fenglaiting area in Chengde, Hebei Province, is characterized by towering peaks, lush trees, winding rivers, and a pleasant climate. Here stands the world-famous Chengde Mountain Resort. It is a royal garden built by the Qing emperors Kangxi and Qianlong over several generations. The pavilions, terraces, and towers are ingeniously constructed amidst mountains, lakes, and rivers, brimming with charm. Surrounding the main complex are the majestic Eight Outer Temples, reflecting the unique architectural styles of ethnic minority religious buildings, making it a renowned scenic spot beyond the Great Wall.
Kangxi and Qianlong were the two outstanding rulers who ushered in the "Kangxi-Qianlong Prosperity." Why did they invest enormous financial and material resources to build such a large imperial retreat in the northern frontier? Was it simply for "escaping the heat"? Does the name "Chengde Mountain Resort" already reveal this straightforward answer? This response is not entirely satisfying, as there is a deeper historical complexity behind it.
