Features: Namibia, with a territory area of over 820,000 square kilometers, is located in the southwestern part of Africa. It borders the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Angola and Zambia to the north, and Botswana and South Africa to the east and south. The coastline is 1,600 kilometers long. Most of the country lies on the western part of the (South African Plateau), with most areas at an elevation of 1,000–2,000 meters. The central region is the Central Highlands, reaching heights of 1,800–2,400 meters; the eastern part is part of the Kalahari Basin; and the coastal western region is a desert plain. Brandberg, at 2,610 meters, is the highest point in the country. The Orange River and the Kunene River serve as the borders with (South Africa) and Angola, respectively. The country has a tropical desert climate, with relatively mild temperatures year-round due to its higher elevation and minimal temperature variations. The country is divided into 13 administrative regions: Bethanien, Gobabis, Grootfontein, Kaokoland, Karasburg, Karibib, Keetmanshoop, Mariental, Okahandja, Omaruru, Ondangua, Otjiwarongo, and Outjo.
Population: 168,000 (est. 1997), most of whom are Black. There are currently 11 tribes, with the Ovambo being the largest, accounting for 51.2% of the national population.
