The country covers an area of over 111,100 square kilometers. The coastline is 537 kilometers long. The terrain is generally higher in the north and lower in the south. From the coast to the interior, it can be divided into three tiers: the coastal plain is about 30-50 kilometers wide, the central region consists of gently rolling hills with an average elevation of 300 to 500 meters, and the interior is a highland with an average elevation of 700 meters. The highest peak is Mount Wutivi in the northwest, with an elevation of 1,381 meters. The major river is the Cavalla River, which is 516 kilometers long. Other significant rivers include the Sestos, Saint John, Saint Paul, and Mano rivers. The country has a tropical monsoon climate with an average annual temperature of 25°C. The rainy season runs from May to October, while the dry season lasts from November to April. Population: Over 3.3 million (2003). The country has 22 ethnic groups, with the main ones being the Kpehr, Bassa, and Kru. Over 40,000 descendants of African Americans who migrated from the southern United States in the 19th century also reside there. The official language is English. About 90% of the population practices animism, while a small number follow Islam or Christianity.
